4 Smart Uses For Spray Insulation In Your Backyard

People who cannot stand working with traditional fiberglass insulation often turn toward spray foam instead. In addition to being user friendly, spray foam has a few properties that make it a better choice for outdoor projects. Closed cell spray insulation binds materials together while creating a solid barrier against moisture and adverse temperatures. Here are some ways to use this insulation type for your backyard builds.  

Warm Shed Walls

If you invested in water-cooled gardening equipment, such as a zero-turn lawnmower, you will want to keep the items in a fully insulated shed for protection from the elements. After all, freezing temperatures can adversely affect the engine in water-cooled equipment, especially if the anti-freeze levels are not sufficient.

You can line your shed walls with high quality spray insulation to keep temperatures steady inside the shed. Since moisture can also harm your equipment by allow rust to develop on bare metal surfaces, you should use closed cell foam in the walls to prevent high humidity levels. Verify the spray foam contains fire retardant chemicals to provide another layer of protection for your equipment.

Heat Up Greenhouse Foundation

Closed cell spray foam works excellent in a greenhouse foundation build as well. Adding a foundation to your greenhouse keeps it planted during storms and controls temperature fluctuations throughout the year. This is especially important if your local climate brings extreme high or low temperature changes. Well-controlled greenhouse temperatures help produce large fruit and vegetable yields year round.

Since greenhouses create a lot of humidity, avoid using wood materials for the build. Instead, create a foundation using foam board and the bottom of the metal frame. Leave a gap on each end to apply the spray foam between the thick boards. The spray insulation will encapsulate the metal frame to keep it from rusting out as well.

Protect Concrete Raised Beds

The main benefit of raised garden beds is the setup's ability to generate and retain soil warmth. You can maximize that benefit by creating your raised beds out of concrete blocks. You can use one or two layers of concrete blocks for this project, depending on your desired height for the garden. Using two rows gives an added benefit of keeping wild animals from foraging in your homegrown goods.

Between the rows, use a layer of spray insulation to keep the concrete firmly together. Also, fill the gaps in the concrete blocks with spray foam to add to its natural temperature control abilities. Since humidity actually helps your plants grow, you can use either open cell or closed cell spray insulation for this project. Using open cell foam, however, may require a bit more attention if the adhesive properties wear away.    

Secure Water Features

Since spray insulation holds materials in its grip after drying, you can use it to create a precarious tower of rocks for a waterfall. You will want to use closed cell foam for its impressive ability to prevent moisture transfer. Arrange the rocks in your desired configuration before you start linking them together. Make sure to use the foam on the backsides of the rocks to keep it hidden from view.

The benefit of using this foam for your waterfall is its ability to keep moisture from ruining the bond. With other adhesives, you may need to renew the bond as water washes the materials away. Closed cell spray foam should hold tight for years without any additional maintenance.

Make sure the spray foam you select will work well for your project. The main difference in open and closed cell spray insulation is its ability to prevent moisture from entering the enclosure. The main benefit of using closed cell foam is its vapor barrier qualities. If you were looking to reduce sound absorption, open cell would be your best bet.
